KARACHI: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar on Friday said that the Supreme Court is displeased with the tax implementation on petroleum products.
Justice Nisar headed bench conducted hearing of the petroleum products taxation case.
During the hearing, Finance Secretary told that the court that the ex-government did not increase the prices which resulted in a loss of revenue, therefore, an increase in price is needed to compensate the losses.
He added that, if needed, the prices could be soared further. In his remarks, CJP said: “This means the public is going to suffer once more. We are not pleased with the tax implementation mechanism because prices are increased by whosoever.”
In response, the Finance Secretary said that the prices in Pakistan are still lower than the rest of the region.
To this, Justice Nisar criticised the government representative and said that he is concerned with what happens in rest of the region, but with how the country is performing.
The apex court adjourned the hearing till July 5 while it also directed all relevant authorities to submit a response.
